Descriptive notes.
35 cm, 110-230 g, wingspan 80 cm. Boldly patterned lapwing with black breast, red bill with black tip, small red wattles and long yellow legs. Sexes alike. Non-breeding adult, during wing moult, has brown tinged crown and white speckling on throat. Juvenile has generally duller plumage, with whitish throat.
Races generally differ noly rather slightly, mainly in amount of gloss, coloration of upperparts and size. atronuchalis has slender white indneck collar, with white patch on ear-coverts isolatede from white breast. Other races very similar to nominate, with aigneri largest and palest, landae smallest, darkest and glossiest.
Habitat.
From lowlands up to 1800 m, in open areas near fresh or brackish water. Rivers, mudbanks, wet grassland, pools. Particularly on cultivated land: such as corn fields, grass fields and large gardens, also within open forests, and on waste, fallow and ploughed land even on grass along highways.
Food and Feeding.
Beetles and other insects, including ants, butterfly and fly larvae, grasshoppers, crickets, bugs, earwigs and termites, also molluscs, worms and crustameans.
Feeds mostly at dawn and dusk, and during moonlit night.
Breeding
Apr-Jun in Iraq. Race indicus breeds Mar-Aug. In Sri Lanka, breeds during monsoon, primarily Jun.
Monogamous. Solitary and territorial. Nest is shallow scrape, unlined or lined with small stones and debris, usually situated near water. 3-4 eggs, incubation 26-30 days. Chick has upperparts grey- brown mottled with black, broad black collar from behind eye around occiput and a white collar below it, underpparts whitish with black pectoral band.
Movements.
Resident, dispersive and in places migratory. In winter, generally moves down from high altitudes. Resident to dispersive in Middle East, in Iraq leaving dried up places after breeding season. Breeding birds of S Turkmenistan migratory, probably wintering in Afghanistan or Pakistan, arriving back in Turkmenistan in second half of Apr.
Status and Conservation.
Not globally threatened. SW Asia holds in the order of 100.000 birds, SC Asia more than 100.000 birds and unknown number in SE Asia.

In Israel subspecies V. i. aigneri. Straggler.
