:קטה סנגלית . קטה קטנה, בהירה, בעלת אברות זנב ארוכות ודקות . השכיחה ביותר מבין הקטות בארץ . לזכר גב חום, הגרון והלחי כתומים-חומים ופס העין והצוואר אפרפרים . החזה והבטן חומים בהירים ושיפולי הבטן שחורים . הנקבה שונה לחלוטין מן הזכר, מנומרת בנקודות חומות על רקע חום בהיר , בית הגידול אזורים מדבריים למחצה ומדבריים, עם צמחיה דלילה . נמנעת מאזורים עם שיחים ועצים . בארץ תושבת שכיחה ביותר בצפון הנגב ובאזור ערד . לרוב בלהקות קטנות, לפעמים הלהקות מתקבצות ללהקות ענק בדרכן לשתות מים ... אמר אביי קואי וקוקאי אסירי קקואתא שריא ... חולין סג, ע"א | ||||||||||

Subspecies and Distribution.

Descriptive notes.
Only sandgrouse with elongated central rectrices lacking color separation on breast. 30-35 cm, 250-330 g, wingspan 55-65 cm. Diagnostic longitudinal black stripe on belly, more conspicuous during flight, dark trailing edge of wing. Throat and sides of head ochre or orange-yellow, paler in female, orbital ring yellow, bill bluish. Dark spots on breast and upperparts of female, but difficult to appreciate from a distance. Birds from Pakistan and India usually slightly paler, more greyish. Habitat. Semi-desert and desert, with patches of vegetation. Usually avoids thick scrub, trees and arable land, occupying both stony and asndy areas. Drinking water is required nearby. Food and Feeding. Consumes primarily small, hard seeds. Apparently shows distinct preference for certain plants such as Asphodelus tenuifolius, Euphorbia guyoniana and Hordeum. .Feeds mostly during morning or late afternoon, drinks during morning. Breeding. Mar-Jul. Nest is scrape or natural depression on ground. Typically near a stone or hoof-marks. 3 eggs, incubation 30 days,with male sitting by night. Downy chick pale greyish brown, only faintly marked. Movements. Mostly sedentary and nomadic. Status and Conservation. Not globally threatened. Widespread and common throughout most of extensive range. Israel. In Israel subspecies Pterocles senegallus. Common resident, dispersive and nomadic over much of Negve and Arava Valley. The commonest sandgrouse in Israel. |
