Subspecies and Distribution.
C. b. brachydactyla Europe from N Yugoslavia to Rumania, and apparently local on Mediterranean coast of N-W Africa.
C. b. hungarica Hungary. C. b. rubiginosa Malta and N Africa. C. a. acutirostris SC Asia from W Afghanistan to NW India and nearby SC Asia CIS Eto Tibet.

Descriptive notes.
Very drab bird with pale grey-brown or sandy grey upper parts streaked with darker blackish brown over the crown. Hind neck and back in parallel lines. It has a faint whitish supercilium and its breast and throat are white without any streaking or spots in the pectoral region.
A rufous wash on the rump is sometimes detectable and the outer webs of the tail feathers are buff or pale rufous.
Habitat.
breeds in sandy and gravelly habitats with very sparse vegetation, at elevations of 1000 - 5000m. Winters in similar or slightly less barren habitats at low altitudes.
Food and Feeding.
May-Jun. Nest, built by both sexes, a depression scrapings in the ground lined with grass and vegetable down.
4 eggs, white with numerous light brown spots, frequently forming a zone at the broader end.
Breeding.
Lays in May-Jul in SW Europe and from mid-Apr in SE Europe; from early Apr in N Africa and Israel; two broods per season. Male song flight typically at heights 'of c. 30-50 m, undulating and bouncing in a circling but rather meandering path, lasting on average 3-5 minutes. Nest built by female, of grasses, rootlets and similar vegetation, lined with softer material, internal diameter 6 cm, placed in shallow scrape on ground, usually beside shrub or grass tuft, often with small rampart of sticks or stones;
Movements.
It is locally migratory in Baluchistan, with the central Asian or N Himalayan population wintering N and C India.
Status and Conservation.
Not globally threatened.

In Israel subspecies C. a. acutirostris straggler, in Eilot fields near Eilat.
