:חטפית גמדית | הקטנה מבין החטפיות, זריזה, ראשה עגול ומקורה קטן יחסית . החזה בולט והזנב חסר מנוחה וארוך יחסית. לזכר גרון וחזה בצבע אדום-ערמוני . וחלקי הגוף העליונים אפורים, משווים לו צורה של אדום-חזה. לנקבה החזה חום צהבהב . בית גידולה משתרע ממרכז אירופה עד למזרח הרחוק וחורפת בדרום מזרח אסיה והודו . מקום חיותה יערות וחורשים, בעיקר של עצים רחבי עלים . בארץ מבקרת חורף נדירה במרכז וצפון הארץ

Descriptive notes.

14-15 cm, 15-18 g, wingspan 23-25 cm. Medium-sized, flat and broad-billed, lengthy flycatcher, biggest of family in west Palearctic and only species with well-streaked foreparts. Plumage otherwise basically dun-grey and dull white. Flight fluent and sweeping. Habitat. In west Palearctic in continental middle latitudes, mainly temperate but also boreal and mountain. A forest bird, in west of range mainly in mixed and deciduous stands. From lowlands to 1200 m but recorded up to 2300 m, in Armenia. Food and Feeding. Mainly flying insects, especially Diptera and Hymenoptera, berries taken occasionally during breeding season, more regularly in autumn. Takes more prey from the air than other west Palearctic Muscicapidae, mainly by sallying out from perch, catching flying insect and returning to perch to swallow it. Breeding. Mid May to end of Jun in C and E Europe. Nest site, in hole in tree or wall, among side shoots against tree trunk, occasionally in bush. Nest, cup of moss, dry grass stalks and leaves, root fibres, and hair, lined with hair. Nest in bush may be domed. 5-6 eggs, sub-elliptical, smooth and glossy, whitish, sometimes faint buff or blue-green, with faint red-brown speckling, occasionally denser at large end. Incubation, 12-13 days by female only. Movements. All populations migratory. Western race, nominate, winters in Pakistan and India, from west Himalayan foothills, south to Baluchistan. Most cpommon in western and central India. Eastern Race albicilla, winters from southern Nepal south into eastern India, west to eastern Madhya, south to Andura Pradesh. East of India, range includes Bangladesh, foothills of Sikkin and Bhutan, Assam east to Indo-China, and south-east China. Status and Conservation. Not globally threatened. Israel. In Israel subspecies F. p. parva rare passage migrant, mainly during autumn, chiefly in southern and eastern parts.
