A. s. brunnescens coastal Afrotropics, Arabia, Iraq, and Iran, N in USSR to Aral Sea, E to Mongolia and N-C India.
A. s. meridionalis Sri Lanka. A. s. amyae Assam to S China. A. s. harterti Philippines.
A. s. lentecaptus Java, Borneo, Lombom, and Sumbawa. A. s. celebensis Sulwesi.
A. s. toxopei Buru, Sumba, Timor and through New Guinea to New Britain, Solomon Is, and Queensland.

Descriptive notes.
18-20 cm, 22-27 g, wingspan 21-24 cm. East Mediterranean race, nominate, upperparts brownish-olive, with rufous tone on rump and overall sandy tinge. Supercilium usually narrower and duller, eye-strip only indistinct, and cheeks duller, thus has less fierce expression, enhanced by narrower bill. Underparts patterned as A. arundinaceus but paler, usually without visible streaks on throat. Sexes similar, no seasonal variation.
Habitat. Breeds from lower middle to subtropical latitudes in warm arid continental climate. Breeds in sufficiently grown reedbeds in lakes, canals, and marshes.
Food and Feeding.
Largely insects and other invertebrates. Takes items from vegetation and by hopping about on ground near water, in marshy habitat.
Breeding.
Apr-Jul in Israel, Mar-Jun in Egypt, May-Jul in USSR. Nest site, in reeds and other aquatic vegetation, normally over water.
Nest, deep, cylindrical cup of reed stems and leaves, lined with finer material. 3-6 eggs, sub-elliptical, smooth and glossy. Incubation 13-14 days by female only.
Movements.
Varies from sedentary to migratory in differnt parts of range. East Mediterranean race, nominate, chiefly resident, with local dispersal outside breeding season.
Arabian and S-C Asian race A. s. brunnescens resident in south of range, migratory further north.
Status and Conservation. Israel.
In Israel two subspecies A. s. stentoreus mainly resident in most low-lying N-C and E parts, and
A. s. bunnescens rare accidental at Eilat
