Subspecies and Distribution.

Descriptive notes.
14-15 cm, 12-13 g, wingspan 20-23 cm. Medium-sized warbler, with long bill, quite round crown, rather long wings, and noticeably long tail.
Closed wing-point forms 1/3 of total wing length, with primary-tips reaching to or beyond end of upper tail-coverts. Essentially brownish-grey, with dusky or even bluish tone on fore-upperparts set off by rather clean but dul white underparts, with narrow pale supercilium, quite bright eye-ring, fairly conspicuous wing-panel, pale rump, and palest-edged tail in Hippolais .
Cocks and waves tail. Sexes similar, little seasonal variation.
Habitat. Breeds in lower middle latitudes of central Palearctic in warm continental semi-arid climates of steppe zone, from lowlands to 1400 m, in pistachio scrub on a desert habitats and of cultivation interspersed with them, frequenting sand dunes with bushy scrub, thickets of tamarisk and scrub around crusted clay sands, and stony desert slopws overgrown with buckthorn.
Food and Feeding.
Apparently chiefly invertebrates for much of year, but not mnown whether fruit important in late summer as in other Hippolais.
Forages chiefly within trees and bushes, and fairly low, but also in more exposed parts of canopy. In breeding season, feeds not infrequently on shaded ground between bushes, thrusts bill into roots and leaves.
Breeding.
Late Apr to Jun in Armenia, Jun in Turkey. Nest site, in bushes and low trees up to 2 m above ground. Nest, very neat, rounded cup, or cylindrical with rounded base, of fine grasses, stems, fur, and plant down, plus spiders' webs. Lined finer material, including plant down, feather grass, and fur. Outside of nest frequently incorporates insect and spider cocoons.
4-5 eggs,sub-elliptical, smooth and glossy, pale lilac-pink, purplish, or grey, very sparsely spotted or speckled grey or blackish.
Incubation period and role of sexes not recorded.
Movements.
Migratoru, entire population moving south or south-west to winter in East Africa. Route lies through Middle East, and no records as far west as Cyprus or Egypt.
Status and Conservation.
Not globally threatened. Common and locally abundant in Transcaucasia and Aral Sea.
Israel.
In Israel subspecies Hippolais languida quite common breeding summer visitor in mountainous Mediterranean and steppe climates of northern and central Israel.
