P. f. fuscatus Siberia from Ob' river to Sakhalin, S to Mongolia, N Szechwan, and Manchuria.

Descriptive notes.
11 cm, 7-8 g, wingspan 15-20 cm. Small, fairly slight but energetic Phylloscopus, with spiky bill, rather short, rounded wings, and rather slender legs.
Plumage essentially brown above and buff and grey-white below, with rusty-white supercilium. Adult lacks any fully green or yellow tones.
Sexes similar, no seasonal variation.
Habitat. Breeds in continental east Palearctic from boreal to warm temperate zone, from lowland plains and marshy river valleys in north to uplands and mountains further south, at altitudes of 500-3900 m. Mainly found in shrub layers of open forest, in regrowth after fires, in willow beds along river and stream banks, and in upland thickets of dwarf birch.
Food and Feeding.
Mainly invertebrates. Mostly by picking from ground.
Breeding.
No further information.
Movements.
Altitudinal and long-distance migrant. Nominate migrates south-west or south-east initially from extremes of range, then south on broad front through China and south-east Tibet. Winters from Rajasthan in N India, and very common in Burma.
Extralimital weigolde descends to lower levels after breeding, migrating through S-W China, S-E Tibet, and eastern Himalayas to winter in Himalayan foothills.

Not globally threatened.
