Subspecies and Distribution.
A. m. melanopogon S Europe and N-W Africa, east to Ukraine and W Turky.
A. m. albiventris shores of Sea of Azov, lower Don river, and Krasnodar area.

Descriptive notes.
12-13 cm 10-12 g, wingspan 15-17 cm. Small, neat, perky warbler, sometimes looking long-legged, with plumage resembling Sedge Warbler but with head patterned even more strongly and upperpars and flanks darker.
Strong head and face pattern, with broad black crown, square-ended white supercilium, dusky eye-stripe, and dark-rimmed cheeks, reminiscent of Firecrest from side, Hindneck and rump almost concolors with mantle and tail.
Sexes similar, no seasonal variation.
Habitat. In west Palearctic, largely a southerly resident counterpart to the more northerly migratory Sedge Warbler in warmer temperate lower mid latitudes, and in Mediterranean and steppe zone. Unlike most congeners no confined to lowlands, ascending in Caucasus to 2000 m.
Food and Feeding.
Almost exclusively arthropods, especially small beetles, but water snails regularly taken. Food obtained by picking and probing from vegetation at or near water surface, also especially when collecting items for nestlings, from water, only to lesser extent taken in the air.
Breeding.
Mid Apr to mid Jun in S Europe. Nest site, over water, usually 30-60 cm above surface, in dense stands of reed, reedmace, rush, and low shrubs. Nest, deep untidy cup of loosely woven leaves and stems of aquatic plants, with denser inner lining of flowers of reed and some feathers.
3-5 eggs, sub-elliptical, smooth and glossy, white to grey-white, finely speckled and lightly mottled light olive overall. Incubation 14-15 days, by both sexes.
Movements.
Sedentary or partially migratory to migratory, birds from north of breeding range moving south to winter within and south of range. Western race, nominate, winters chiefly in coastal areas and islands of Mediterranean rigion. Eastern races, albiventris and mimica, winter from Middle East and Iraq wast to N-W India, and western Turkmeniya.
Status and Conservation. Israel.
In Israel two subspecies A. m. melanopogon an uncommon migrant and winter visitor, and A. m. mimica a scarce migrant and winter visitor. Rare breeder in N Israel.
