Descriptive notes.
14 cm. Closely resembles Masked Weaver but crown mainly chestnut with a very narrow black frontal -band. Male has forehead chestnut, crown golden-chestnut, nape yellow, remainder upperparts olive-yellow. A conspicuous black, mask with clear-cut edges enclosing lores, ear-coverts, cheeks, chin and upper throat. Underparts bright yellow, the lower throat washed with chestnut. Iris orange. Bill black.
Habitat. Ranges widely and commonly, almost all habitats except evergreen forest and castal bush. Mostly savana farmland, semi arid scrub, often near water, but also in waterless Kalari and Namibia.
Frequents open thorn scrub.
Usually remote from human habitation.
Food and Feeding.
Gregarious, foraging flocks usually 5-20 birds. Forages on ground or in trees, gleaning from bark and leaves, mainly seeds and insects..
Breeding.
Singly or in small colonies. Typical retort-shaped Ploceine nest of woven grass strips with a lining of grass heads. No visible spout. Suspended from branch of thorny or soft-leaved tree.
2-3 eggs, variable, usually pinkish or pale greenish-blue spotted and blotched with different shades of brown and lilac.
Movements
Local resident and partial migrant during non-breeding season.
Status and Conservation.
Not globally threatened.Commonly in habitat zones.
Israel.
In Israel subspecies Ploceus velatus feral, record breeds in Yarkon River banks, near Tel-Aviv.
