Subspecies and Distribution.
P. mollis Tristan da Cunha, Gough Is. and Antipldes Is.
P. m. dubia Prince Edward Is, Crozet, Kerguelen and Amsterdam Is.
Descriptive notes.
30-37 cm; 280-310 g; wingspan 80-95 cm.
Underwing has pale central stripe. Very similar to P.feae and P.madeira Pterodroma mollis large, but fairly short-winged. Underwing has pale central stripe. Very similar to P. feae but darker on face and collar. Rare dark phase exists.
Race dubia often has collar thicker and more conspicuous, but much individual variation, upperwing darker, obscuring dark open "M" of nominate race. Outer tail feathers grey as opposed to white. highlights dark mask, collar faint.
Habitat.
Marine and highly pelagic, rarely approaching land except at colonies.
Breeds on oceanic islands, occupying steep slopes with tussock grass or ferns, usually along coast but occasionally inland.
Food and Feeding
Mostly cephalopods, also crustaceans and some fish.
Prey apparently taken mainly by surface-seizing. Occasionally follows ships and cetaceans.
Breeding.
Starts Sep.Colonial; nests in long burrows ( burrow can be occupied by two pairs.
1 egg. Incubation 50 days.
Movements.
Little known. Most birds apparently leave vicinity of colony after breeding, some populations may be largely sedentary. Birds present around Amsterdam Is, throughout year.
Disperses over S Atlantic and Indian Oceanss. Young birds may wander more widely than adults.
Status and Conservation.
Not globally threatened. Total population thought to number tens of thousands of breeding pairs.
Israel.
In Israel subspecies Pterodroma mollis Accidental visitor. One found Mar 1997.
