Descriptive notes.

43 cm; wingspan 104 cm. Only petrel of its size all dark with lower breast and belly; undertail-coverts dark. Throat can be pale in worn plumage. Juvenile has greyish tips to mantle feathers in fresh plumge. Habitat. Marine; and probably pelagic. Breeds oceanic islands, occupying ridges at altitude of150-600 m. Food and Feeding Mostly squid, with some fish and crustaceans. Prey taken by surface- seizing. Breeding. Breeds in winter, starting Mar. Colonial; nests in burrows dug in soft soil. 1 egg. Movements. Disperses throughout S Atlantic, occurring off E coast of S America and rounding South Africa into Indian Ocean. N to at least 26 S. Status and Conservation. Not globally threatend. Present population numbers few hundred breeding pairs at Tristan da Cunga and some thousands at Gough Is. At Tristan, liable to suffer some human exploitation; several introduced predators, including rats and cats. On Gough Is., house mouse is only potential predator introduced, but population of 8000 skuas feed almost entirely on seabirds, including large numbers of present species. Thorough census needed, as well as study of biology and ecology, to establish conservation requirements. Israel. In Israel subspecies Pterodroma incerta Accidental visitor.
