Subspecies and Distribution.
Calomectris leucomelas NE Japan, Izu and Ryukyu Is. to Taiwan, islands off E China and Korea
Descriptive notes.
48 cm; 450-550 g, wingspan 100-125 cm.
Slender build, head small, with bill long and thin. Head mottled above giving way to pale forehead.
In worn plumage can have white crescent at base of tail.
Juvenile as adult. Habitat.
Marine and partly pelagic, also occurring over inshore waters.
Typically breeds on offshore islands, occupying forested hills.
Food and Feeding
Mostly fish and squid.
Prey captured by surface seizing, also mades shallow plunges. Often associates with other seabirds, especially Procellariifomes.
Follows fishing boats; attracted to anchovy crawls off Japan.
Breeding.
Starts Mar. Colonial; nests in burrowsw .
1 egg; incubation 64 days.
Movements.
Migrates S towards Australia, many ringing returns from Philippines, large flocks occur off New Guinea, recently found to be regular off Austrlia.
Recorded Clifornia, Sri lanka, Maldive I. and Eilat (Israel).
Status and Conservation.
Not globally threatend. Abundant and widespread, with total populationof several million birds.
Israel.
In Israel subspecies Calomectris leucomelas Accidental visiter, first recorded in Israel by Morgan in 1992, two individuals at north beach of Eilat.
