. אנפה קטנה בצבע שחור אפור-לבן. עמידתה השפופה עושה את מראה לגוצית
, גבה וקדקודה שחורים, הציצית לבנה, צרה ומאורכת ביותר, מקור ירקרק
. הרגלים צהובות או ורודות והעיניים אדומות
. הצעירים צבועים בצבע חום מנוקד ודומים לאנפה משורטטת קטנה
. במעופה בולט הניגוד בין הצבעים הבהירים והכהים
. חתירת הכנפים מהירה משל האנפות הגדולות, לעיתים עפה במבנה
, עוף מסתתר, לילי בעיקר, לרוב נראה מעופף בדימדומים או נח שפוף בסבכי ביצות
. לעיתים רחוק ממים. מקנן במושבות, בדרך כלל על עצים או שיחים
. בקן 3 ביצים כחלחלות ירקרקות
. בארץ יציבה מצויה, מקננת במספר מושבות במרכז וצפון הארץ

Descriptive notes.
62 cm, 550-800 gr, wingspan 110 cm. Shorter nuchal plumes, legs and lores red during courtship.
Non-breeding adult has cap and back duller. Juvenil spotted and streaked brown, grey, buff and whitish.
Races separated essentially on size and plumage variations, hoactli has narrower supercilium and legs salmon pink during breeding, falklandicus dimorphic with normal and dark morphs and obscurus is darkest race, large and smoky brown underparts.
Habitat.
Fresh, salt or brackish water, areas with aquatic vegetation or on forested margins of shallow rivers, streams, pools, ponds, lakes, swamps and mangroves.
Feeding in dry land and along marine coasts. Roosts in leafy trees: pine, oak, mangroves, etc, or bamboo.
Food and Feeding
Very varied diet, including Fish, frogs, snakes, turtles, lizards, spiders, small rodents, crabs, crustaceans, and eggs and chicks of other species.
Feeds crepuscular and nocturnal but can feed during day.
Passive feeder make use with variety of techniques including "standing", "walking slowly", "hovering" (whereby they fly over the water, pausing in mid-air to capture prey) and "swimming feeding" (a bird will open and close its wing to frighten prey).
Mainly feeds alone and maintains territory.
Breeding.
Colonial, sometimes in very large colonies (5500 nests in Malaysia).
Nest site very variable: trees, bushes, reedbeds, cliff ledges and even on ground. Nest of sticks, rushes, reeds, etc.
3-5 eggs, incubation usually by mfemale 20-22 days. chicks have buffish brown down with darker crown. Sexual maturity at 2-3 years.
Movements.
Post-breeding dispersal in all directions, in Europe starting in Jun. W Palearctic birds cross Mediterranean and Sahara on broad front. Most N American breeders winter in S USA, C America and Caribbean. NE Asian populations winter from SE China to Philippines.
Status and Conservation.
Not globally threatend. Generally common to locally abundant throughout most of range.
Israel. In Israel subspecies N. n. nycticorax locally common breeder, including resident and migrant populations.
