, גודלה 92-95 ס"מ, צבעה שחור עם גרון לבן
. כנפיה וגבה בהירים במקצת. יש אנפות שהצבע הלבן חסר
. בית חיותה משתרע מדרום סהרה ועד דרום אפריקה
. בית גידולה, אזורים יבשתיים לחים, שדות מרעה, גדות נהרות ואגמים
. מבקרת באקראי ונדירה ביותרת. פרט בודד נתגלה באילת ע"י שיריחי

Subspecies and Distribution.

Ardea melanocephalaAfrica from S Sahara to Ethiopia and S. Africa.
Descriptive notes.
95 cm; Somewhat variable, wings and back can be much paler, highlighting black of head and neck, extent of white varies, some birds lacking white spots on foreneck. Others with no white at all.
Juvenile has white underparts and brownish grey neck.
Habitat.
Typically found in damp, open pastureland and sometimes far from water. Also margins of rivers and lakes, coastal areas and forest clearings
Food and Feeding
Vertebrates and invertebrates, mostly terrestrial, insects, rodents, lizards, snakes, frogs, birds, crabs, fish also scavenges.
Passive feeder, partially nocturnal, generally solitary.
Breeding.
During the rains session, colonial in small mixed colonies, sometimes 200 nests.
Nest of sticks usually high in tree, less often in reedbeds or on ground.
2-6 eggs, incubation 25 days, chicks have pale grey down, fledging 50 days, juvenil independent at 60 days.
Movements.
Sedentary in equatorial zone elsewhere migratory
Migrate to drier zones during rains, moving into Sudan vegrant to Algeria, SW Europe, Oman, Madagascar.
May commute over 30 km between feeding grounds and roost.
Status and Conservation.
Not globally threatend.Widespread and common.
Israel. In Israel subspecies Ardea melanocephala, accidental visitor, observed and photographed at Eilat by Shirihai.
