. האנפה הגדולה ביותר 135 ס"מ. תפוצתה באזורנו בצפון ים סוף והמפרץ הפרסי
, פרט לקודקודה החלודי' מזכירה בצבעיה את האנפה הארגמנית
. הקטנה ממנה בהרבה. קריאתה חזקה, עמוקה וצורמנית, דומה לנביחת כלב
. בית גידולה - ביצות מים רדודים. בישראל מזדמנת נדירה ביותר

Subspecies and Distribution.

Ardea goliath Africa from S Sahara to Iraq and Iran, some non-breeding along Red Sea.
Descriptive notes.
Largest heron, 135 cm; wingspan 210-230 cm.
Bill can be all blackish, occipital crest short and inconspicuous.
Juvenile has head and neck paler and duller, with rusty buff edging above and paler underparts.
Habitat.
mainly near water, fresh or salt.
Frequently found in shallow water along lake shores, marshes, rivers, estuaries, reefs and mangrove creeks.
Food and Feeding
Vertebrates rodents, lizards, snakes, frogs, crabs, fish, prawns and floating carrion.
Diurnal and rather inactive feeder, normally alone or in apairs, rarely larger flocks. defends large feeding territory.
Breeding.
During the rains session, in some places all year.
Nest in colonies mixed with darters, cormorants and other herons.
Nest is large platform of sticks or reeds, placed 3 m up tree over water, on partly submerged tree, mangroves, bushes, sedges and cliffs.
3 eggs, incubation 25-30 days, chicks have grey brown down, fledging 40-80 days.
Movements.
Sedentary, dispersive or nomadic movements in some areas in response to seasonal changes in conditions of habitat.
Vagrant to Egypt, Syria and Madagascar.
Status and Conservation.
Not globally threatend.Widespread and common.
Israel. In Israel subspecies Ardea goliath accidental visitor, six observed end record beteen 1937 and 1993.
