Subspecies and Distribution.
E. g. nigripes islands of S E Asia and S E Pacific. E. g. immaculata Australia to New Zealand.
E. g. golaris W Africa from Mauritania to Gabon. E. g. schistacea castal E Africa, Red Sea and Parsian Gulf. E. g. dimorpha Madagascar, Kenya to Mozambique.
Descriptive notes.
60 cm, 500 gr, wingspan 95 cm. Polymorphic: white, grey and dark morphs. Dark morphs paler than E. ardesiaca with white throat and two nuchal plumes, legs longer and bill thinner.
Non-breeding adult lacks ornamental plumes. Juvenile as non-breeding adulet but very variable.
Races separated on colour fo feet, legs, bill and lores. Bill heavier in gularis and schistacea, and also longer in former.
Habitat.
Wide variety, all kinds of open wetlands with shallow lake sides, ponds, flooded plains, marshes, alcaline lakes, mangroves, occasionally in dry fields.
Normally in lowlands but observed up to 2000 m in Armenia. Races schistacea & golares coastal on rocky or sandy shores and reefs. Race dimorpha also coastal but also on dry inland savanna up to 1500 m.
Food and Feeding
Fish, crustaceans and aquatic insects.
Catches prey by means of characteristic "Foot Stirring" (whereby the bird vibrates one of its legs. These foot movements are particularly usedby species with brightly colored feet).
Normaly solitary, aggressovely defending feeding territory.
Breeding.
Mar-Jul in Palearctic. Jul-Sep in India, tropical Africa during rains.
Nests on ground or in reed beds, bushes or trees.
2-6 eggs incubation 20-25 days, chicks have white down.
Movements.
Post- breeding dispersal. Palearctic breeders partially migratory, the populations around Mediterranean to Middle East and tropical Africa. The E populations migrate to china and Philippines. Populations of Africa India and Australia sedentary.
Status and Conservation.
Not globally threatend. Abundant in Europe.
Israel. In Israel subspecies E. g. garzetta passage migrant, winter and sumer visitor also resident breeder. in Israel has increased since 1950's to 2000 pairs in 1980.
