Subspecies and Distribution.
Ciconia nigra breeds across Palearctic. Winters in E Africa and from Pakistan, India and China. | ||||||||||

Descriptive notes.
100 cm, wingspan 155 cm. male larger. Non-breedung adult has plumage and bare parts duller. Juvenil all dingy brown with dull green bare parts. Habitat. During breeding season: quiet, peaceful marshes around lakes and rivers with extensive reedbeds, these must be comprehensively flooded and fairly shallow, with mixture of young and old reeds and clearings where bird can fish undisturbed and unseen. Sites with either fresh or brackish water. Out with breeding season, varied habitat, including grassy areas, beds of cress, gravel pits, fish farms, ditches, etc. Food and Feeding Fish, frogs also amphibia, insects, snails, crabs and small reptiles, mammals and birds. Usually forages in shallow water, catching prey with a sharp stab of bill. Breeding. Starts towards spring in Palearctic. N in Africa mostly in cool dry season. Solitary nester, in forest trees. Large stick nest, lined with moss, grass and leaves, cemented together with earth. 3-4 eggs, incubation 32-38 days. chicks have white down. Sexual maturity at 3 year old. Movements. Migratory, S Africa birds disperse after breeding. W Palearctic birds skirt Mediterranean because more capable of sustained flapping flight. Migration spread fairly evenly throughout day. Status and Conservation. Not globally threatened. Israel. In Israel subspecies Ciconia nigra common to very common passage migrant, uncommon winter visitor. |
