. עוף גדול ולבן דמוי אנפה בעל מקור שחור רחב המתרחב בקצהו בצורה של כף
. לבוגר פס צהוב בחזה, ובעונת הרביה מצמח ציצית ארוכה וצהובה
. הצעירים חסרי ציצית וקצות כנפיהם שחורות
, בית גידולו מים מתוקים וחופי ים רדודים. מקנן במושבות על גבי שיחים
. חורשות קנים ועצים הצומחים באזורי ביצות

Subspecies and Distribution.
p. l. leucorodia Spain, Holland and SE Europe to C E Asia, Persian Gulf, India and Sri Lanka.
p. l. balsaci Naurois and Roux Is. (islands of Mauritania)
p. l. archeri Somalia and coasts of Red Sea.

Descriptive notes.
90 cm, 1200-2000 g, wingspan 130 cm. Mslr larger, with longer legs and bill.
Yellow at base of neck from only small patch in front to complete ring. Non-breeding adulet lacks crest and yellow.
Races balsci & archeri smaller.
Habitat.
Extensive wetlands: marshes, rivers and flooded areas. Marine habitats: deltas, estuaries, tidal creeks and coastal lagoons.
Nests on islands in rivers and lakes with scattered bushes or trees.
Food and Feeding
Water insects: dragonflies, beetles, locusts and caddisflies, frogs and small fish. Sometimes algae, aquatic and other plant matter.
Usually feeds in small flocks by sweeping bill from side to side, sometimes runs after prey, partly nocturnal.
Breeding.
Spring breeder in N of range. In Indian Subcontinent depending on water conditions, African breeders before or during rains.
Typically forms monospecifec colonies. Nest is platform of sticks, reeds or grass stems, when nesting on islands, or in reeds, bushes, mangroves or trees.
3-4 eggs, incubation 24-5 days. chicks have sparse white down. Sexual maturity 3-4 years old.
Movements.
Race of Palearctic is migratory and dispersive, European population winters partly in tropical Africa and partly in Mediterranean Basin. Post-fledging dispersal to N in early autumn.
Birds nesting in N Asia winter in S Asia, birds ringed in Caspian region have been recovered in India.
Races balsci & archeri sedentary and dispersive.
Status and Conservation.
Not globally threatened.
Israel. In Israel the subspecies p. l. leucorodia Common passage migrant and winter and summer visitor.
