. בולט בצבעו הורוד, במעופו ניכר הניגוד בין האדום לשחור בכנפיו
. למקורו צורה טיפוסית המותאמת לסינון מזונו
, עוף קולני, המתקבץ בלהקות גדולות ביותר
. בשעת מעופו משמיע קולות המזכירים געגוע אוזים
. בית גידולו אגמים רדודים, לגונת מלוחות וביצות אלקליות
. הקן נראה כערמת בוץ שבראשה ביצה בודדת
. בארץ עובר אורח ומבקר קיץ וחורף
Subspecies and Distribution.
p. l. leucorodia Spain, Holland and SE Europe to C E Asia, Persian Gulf, India and Sri Lanka.
p. r. ruber Caribbean and Galapagos
p. r. roseus Spain to Kzakhstan S to africa and through Middle East to India and Sri Lanka.
Descriptive notes.
140-165 cm, 3500 g, wingspan 155 cm. Male larger, juvenile grey brown with some pink in underparts, wings and tail, the legs, feet and bill are brown. Race roseus paler and less brightly colored.
Habitat.
Lagoons and salt pans, saline lakes also sandbanks and mud flats.
Food and Feeding
Varied diet: aquatic invertebrates, crustaceans, molluscs and insects. Also plant matter like largely of seeds or marsh grasses, algae and decaying leaves.
Normally feeds with head, and often most of neck, completely under water, while walking along steadily.
Breeding.
Apr In Europe, Feb-Mar in N Africa and Mar-Jun in Bahamas
Dense colonies of up to 20,000 pairs, in Galapagos small colonies of 50 pairs.
Nest is normally truncated cone of mud with shallow bowl on top. 1 egg, incubation 27-31 days. chicks have pale grey down. Sexual maturity 5-6 years old. Movements.
Migratory and dispersive, N population regular migrations in W Mediterranean, migration apparently by night.
In warmer climes dispersive after breeding. Daily movements during breeding between Bonaire Is. and Venezuela , in search of food. The Galapagos population is sedentary.
Status and Conservation.
Not globally threatened.
Israel. In Israel the subspecies p. r. roseus Scarce to uncommon passage migrant and winter and summer visitor.
