Descriptive notes.
38 cm, 350 g. Male has eclipse plumage. Juvenile resembles female but with spots on belly buff markings on uppertail. Subspecies separated according to size and coloration differences, carolinensis differentiated, with black line along flanks, white vertical line between breast and flanks and thinner cream colored line delimiting facial pattern. Habitat. Various types of freshwater or brackish wetlands, particularly shallow with abundant vegetation. Food and Feeding Mainly aquatic vegetarian, leaves, stems, roots and seeds during winter months. Many aquatic invertebrates in spring and summer. Feeds by dabbling, head-dipping, diving in shallow water and filters mud. Breeding. Mar-May, in single pairs or loose groups. Nest is deep hollow in ground, lined with leaves and down, hidden among vegetation. 8-11 eggs, incubation 22 days. Chicks have dark brown down, yellow below. Sexual maturity 1 year. Movements. Migratory, northernmost breeding birds movings S to winter at lower latitudes, but breeders of mor temperate regions mostly sedentary. Status and Conservation. Not globaly threatened. Widespread and fairly abundant, one of most abundant ducks. Israel. In Israel the subspecies A. a. crecca Very common passage migrant,winter and summer visitor. Throughout country. |
