Descriptive notes.
45 cm, 350-900 g. Buff cinnamon speculum, with neck variable. Females slightly smaller. Juvenile more greyish and with more streaked underparts. Habitat. Preferably wetland with shallow, still, fresh water and abundant floating and emergent vegetation. Food and Feeding Aquatic plants, leaves, stems, roots and seeds and fruits. Many terrestrial and aquatic invertebrates, amphibians and some small fish in spring and summer. Feeds by dabbling, upending and head-dipping in shallow water. Sometimes grazes on land. Breeding. Generally during rains, in single pairs. Nest is mound of grass lined with down, hidden among vegetation on ground near water. 6-12 eggs, incubation 27 days. Chicks have dark brown down, yellowish below. Movements. Sedentary. Somewhat despersive outside breeding season, movements often linked to extent of flooding. Status and Conservation. Not globaly threatened. Common to abundant. Israel. In Israel the subspecies Anas erythrorhyncha Accidental visitor, one recoeded at Ma'agan Mikhael 58'. |
