Descriptive notes.
38-41 cm, 300-500 g. wingspan 70 cm. Green speculum, with white line along front. Male has eclipse plumage. Female has duller upperwing and whitish belly. Juvenile resembles female but has finely streaked and spotted ventral parts. Habitat. Preferably inland on swampy meadows, flooded fields and shallow freshwater marshes and small lakes with abundant emergent vegetation. Winters in coastal marshes or lagoons also at sea. Food and Feeding Green part of aquatic plants and grass , leaves, stems, roots and seeds, Many terrestrial and aquatic invertebrates, amphibians and some small fish. Feeds by dabbling and picking from surface also upends in shallow waters. Breeding. Apr-May, in single pairs. Nest is depression lined with feathers and down, hidden among vegetation on ground near water. 9 eggs, incubation 21-23 days. Chicks have dark brown down above, yellowish below. Sexual maturity at 1 year. Movements. Migratory. Wintering chiefly in sub Saharan Africa, Iceland, Hawaii, S E Asia. Has occurred in Azores, Iceland, Hawaii and Aleutian Is. Status and Conservation. Not globaly threatened. Common to abundant. Israel. In Israel the subspecies Anas querquedula Common passage migrant, rare winter and summer visitor, very rare casual breeder. |
