:צולל ביצות צבעו חום ערמוני, מתחת זנבו יש לו סוככות לבנות . המבדילות בינו לבין נקבות הצולל המצויץ או החלודי. עיניו לבנות . הנקבה חיוורת יותר, ואין לה פס לבן בבסיס המקור . בשעת מעופם נראה בכנפם פס לבן המבדילם מהצולל החלודי , בית גידולו מקווי מים מתוקים או מלוחים במקצת, עומדים או זורמים לאיטם . בעלי גדות עטורי צמחיה עשירה וחורשות קנים . בארץ עובר אורח וחורף מצוי עד נדיר, מקנן נדיר ביותר בצפון ... רבא איקלע לבי ריש גלותא וטפלו ליה בר אווזא ... פסחים עד, ע"ב | ||||||||||

Descriptive notes.
38-42 cm, 400-650 g. Male has small white spot on chin, blackish collar and eclipse plumage. Female duller, browner with inconspicuous small white spots on throat. Juvenile very similar to female but lacks white undertail-coverts and has silvery brown underparts with blackish barring on breast. Habitat. Vegetated swamps, marshes, lakes and slow flowing rivers with areas of open water. In winter, opten on larger lakes, brackish coastal lagoons and tidal estuaries. Food and Feeding Green part of aquatic plants and grass , leaves, stems, roots and seeds. Occasionally aquatic invertebrates and insects amphibians and small fish. Feeds by diving, upending head-dipping and dabbling also filters mud on shore. Breeding. Apr-May, in single pairs. Nest is depression in thick heap of grass, reed stems and leaves, lined with down, on ground or water. 8-10 eggs, incubation 26 days. Chicks have brown down upperparts, and yellow on underparts, face and dorsal spots. Sexual maturity at 1 year. Movements. Migratory. winters in Mediterranean basin, Caspian Sea, Middle East and sub Saharan Africa. Records outside regular range, particularly in N W Europe. Status and Conservation. Not globally threatened. Israel. In Israel the subspecies Aythya nyroca Uncommon passage migrant and winter visiter, fairly rare breeder. |
