Subspecies and Distribution.

Descriptive notes.
40-50 cm, 900-1250 g. Male has eclipse plumage, green gloss to head. Female Legs of female vary from grey green to dark slate blue. Juvenile very similar to female. Subspecies mariloides more boldly vermiculated black.(see stamp nu' 4) Habitat. Breeds on shallow, small lakes and tundra pools of high latitudes. Winters on coast, on brackish lagoons, sheltered bays and shallow marine waters. Sometimes inland on large lakes. Food and Feeding Major diet- molluscs (80-90%) but also insects, worms, small fish and aquatic plants. Feeds by diving, also dabbling. Breeding. May, in single pairs. Nest is depression lined with grass and down, on ground among vegetation. 8-10 eggs, incubation 26-28 days. Chicks have chestnut brown down above, and pale buff on underparts and small dorsal spots. Sexual maturity at 1 to 2 years. Movements. Migratory. winters along coasts of N America, N W Europe, Black and Caspian Seas and Japan and China Seas. Males tend to remain much further N than females or immatures. Status and Conservation. Not globally threatened. Common and widespread. Israel. In Israel the subspecies a. marila Occasional and accidental winter visiter. |
