Descriptive notes.
35-45 cm, 500-900 g. wingspan 65 cm. Male has eclipse plumage. Female has white neck and different pattern of secondary coverts. Juvenile resembles female, but central wing coverts have brownish edges. Habitat. Freshwater bodies: lakes, pools, bogs, rivers and muskegs in taiga zone during breeding season. In winters on larger lakes, brackish coastal lagoons, estuaries and un commonly on open sea. Food and Feeding Mostly aquatic invertebrates, molluscs, crustaceans also fish and amphibians mainly in winter and early spring. In fresh water, insects also a little plant material.. Feeds by diving, from surface. Breeding. Apr-May, in single pairs . Nest lined with some feathers and down , in tree-hollows. 8 eggs, incubation 26-29 days. Chicks have sooty black down above, whith below. Sexual maturity at 2 years. Movements. Migratory. winters W and C Europe, E Mediterranean basin, Black Sea S USSR, Middle East, E China, Korea and Japan. Sometimes displaced by severely cold winters. Status and Conservation. Not globally threatened. Israel. In Israel the subspecies Mergus albellus Occasional and irregular winter visitor. |
