Descriptive notes.
46 cm, 500-820 g. wingspan 67 cm. Male has yellow iris. Female distinguished from other related species by shape of head and more robust bill.
Both sexes have non-breeding plumage, but male retains white face, female goes duskier.
Juvenile resembles non-breedibg female, but is duller and paler.
Habitat.
Lakes, pools, marshes and lagoons of brackish or fresh waters bordered by thick cover of vegetation in arid country.
Outside breeding season, also on saline lakes and larger lagoons.
Food and Feeding
Aquatic plants: chiefly seeds, leaves and other green parts.Also aquatic invertebrates.
Feeds by diving, sometimes dabbles on surface.
Breeding.
May, in single pairs .
Nest is platform of reed stems and leaves, lined with down, in dense vegetation, on ground or over water, often in old nests of other waterbirds.
5-8 eggs, incubation 23 days. Chicks have dark brown down above, whith below.
Movements.
Migratory. breeders in Mediterranean area chiefly sedentary
Oriental population strongly migratory.
Winters at a few sites in S Caspian Sea, Middle East and Pakistan rarely to India.
Status and Conservation.
Vulnerable. Total population has appeared relatively stable with only 14,000 after sharp decline in last few decades.
Israel. In Israel the subspecies Oxyura leucocephala Uncommon winter visitor, formerly breeder.
