Descriptive notes.
55 cm, 1-1,5 kg, wingspan 130 cm. Lesser and different from outer geese, unmistakable. Juvenile duller with white spotting on sides and mantle. Habitat. Lichen covered tundra, not far from water. Winters in low arable land near lakes. Food and Feeding Various plants: roots, leaves, stems and green parts of grasses, sedges and some aquatic plants. Complemented with green sprouts of cereals, grain and tubers. Forages by grazing on land. Breeding. Jun, in loose groups. Shallow nest of reed stems and grass, lined with down, on ground. 6-7 eggs, incubation 23-25 days. Chicks have dark brown down paler below. Sexual maturity 3-4 years. Movements. Migratory, leaves breeding quarters in Siberian tundras mid to late September. Winters mostly around Black Sea in Romania and Bulgaria, and to a lesser extent around Caspian and Aral Sea Frequent stragglers to Britain and Netherlands, vagrants also as far as Egypt and far to China. Status and Conservation. Insufficiently known. Alarming decline in numbers during last few decades. Israel. In Israel the subspecies Branta ruficollis Accidental, rare winter visitor. |
