Crex crex W and NW Europe from British Is. to China. Winters from Zaire to South Africa.

Descriptive notes.
26-30 cm, 120-160 g wingspan 45-50 cm.
Both sexes are similar, but female has slightly warmer buff upperparts, narrower and duller grey streak over eye.
Non breeding plumage similar to breeding, but upperparts more rufous brown, less grey. Male has less grey on side of head, and little or none on neck and breast
Advertising call of male a monotonous, rasping double call "krek-krek", calls from ground or low perch, early in breeding season may call for hours, both day and night.
Habitat.
Dry to moist meadows and other grasslands, including alpine meadows, marsh fringes and cleared forest areas.
Avoids very marshy areas, standing water and open ground with rocks or sand.
Food and Feeding
Diet mainly insects and teir larvae, worms, molluscs, also small frogs, small mammals, green parts of plants, and seeds.
Most active at dawn and dusk, after rain and during drizzle.
Breeding
Apr-Aug, monogamous pair-bond of seasonal duration formerly assumed, but serial polygyny regularly occurs, males occupying shifting and overlapping home ranges, and mating with two or more females, remaining with a female only until second half of laying period.
Nest site in grassland near isolated trees, or in bushy or weedgrown areas. Nest built on ground in dense continuous vegetation, lined with dead leaves, built by female only
8-12 eggs. Incubation 16-20 days, by female only. Chick has sooty brown-black down, tinged rufous brown on upperparts, pale pink bill.
Movements.
Migratory, birds from W Europe main flyways into Africa via Morocco and Algeria, few cross Mediterranean between gese flvways. Some, probably from E Palearctic, enter Egypt and Sudan via Arabia and Red Sea.
Status and Conservation.
there is clear evidence of very steep long-term population decline.
Israel. In Israel subspecies Crex crex. Fairly rare autumn and uncommon spring passage migrant.
