Subspecies and Distribution.
Grus grusScandinavia and VE Europe to N China and Russian Far East, Turkey and Caucasus, Armenia and Azerbaijan. Winters in France, Iberian Peninsula, NW and NE Africa, Middle East, Pakistan, India and S China.

Descriptive notes.
115 cm, 4500-6100 g, wingspan 180-200 cm. Grey body, with dark head has white stripe starting behind eye and extending down nape, red skin patch on crown, iris yellow and black primaries. Similar to G. nigricollis, but has extensive white on head.
juvenile has crown feathered, body plumage tipped with yellowish brown.
Habitat.
Wide variety of shallow wetlands, including forested swamps, sedge meadows and bogs.
Throughout winter range, forages in agricultural fields and pastures, and roosts in nearby wetlands or other shallow waters.
Food and Feeding
Omnivorous, plant items generally more important, especially outside breeding season. Roots, rhizomes, tubers, stems, leaves, seeds of emergent wetland plants, legumes and waste grain.
Animal items more frequent in summer diet. Mainly invertebrates, including worms, snails, insects also frogs, snakes, lizards, fish and rodents.
Forages on land and in water by probing and picking.
Breeding
Spring breeder, most eggs laid in May. Nest is mound 80 cm wide, of wetland vegetation. Situated in shallow marsh or bog, often near trees. 2 eggs, incubation 28-31 days. Chicks dark brown above, pale brown below. Sexually mature at 4-6 years.
Movements.
Major migration routes, from Scandinavia and N continental Europe through W Europe to wintering areas in France, Spain, Portugal and Morocco. From NE Europe through C Europe and Italy to wintering areas in Tunisia, Libya and Algeria. From E Europe and W Russia, through Balkans and across and around Black Sea to wintering areas in E Africa, Middle East and Asia Minor.
Status and Conservation.
Not globally threatened. Total estimated population 250.000 birds, but only European and European Russian populations reliably surveyed on regular basis.
Israel. In Israel subspecies Grus grus. Common passage migrant over all Israel and winter visitor.
